"The Sheffield Institute for Translational Neuroscience (SITraN) is an essential development in the fight against motor neuron disease and other common neurodegenerative disorders of the motor system. As yet no single Institution anywhere in the world has developed the necessary critical mass and facilities to exploit the potential of modern neuroscience, the 'post-genome' era, and exciting developments in biomedical therapeutics with specific focus on this devastating group of illnesses. Centres of excellence for neurodegneration research across the globe have achieved considerable progress, but none are effectively poised to develop these advances to the full. The establishment of SITraN in Sheffield offers the opportunity for a coordinated approach to the development and clinical trialling of new therapies based on rational targets of proven preclinical effectiveness".

Why support SITraN?

We are very grateful to all our supporters who generously donate their time and money to support our research into neurodegenerative diseases. Whether it is as an individual, family, through collective fund raising activities or via grants from funding bodies and charities.

A personal quote from one of our supporters - Mr J M L Stone,
Founding Patron - Sheffield Institute Foundation for Motor Neurone Disease.

"For many years before Professor Pamela Shaw told me of her vision for a dedicated Motor Neurone Research Institute in Sheffield I had known of the horrors of MND, without, thankfully,  having been touched by it personally.  Given that I was born and spent the first part of my life in Sheffield, and that my Father had done his undergraduate and graduate studies at the University (where he was the first elected President of the Students' Union) I could see compelling reasons to support Professor Shaw - and I have no reason to change my opinion.  Only if sufficient funds are "thrown at" the vile disease, will there be any chance of a cure.  SITraN offers the best chance in the world."

Leaving a Gift in Your Will to SITraN:

A legacy gift is often the most significant gift a person ever makes. Your legacy gift to SITraN will be a way to continue your positive influence on progress of our research into trying to find better treatments for patients with neurodegenerative diseases.

As SITraN is based in the University of Sheffield, which is an exempt charity, this means that any sum left to us via the University in a Will is free of tax. This is true whether you leave your gift unrestricted, or whether you express a wish for your gift to be used for a particular purpose.

We will be happy to talk to you about any areas of our research you may wish to support and how a legacy would help us in the future.

Including a gift of any size in your Will is easy to do, and will give you the opportunity to help support SITraN and its research into neurodegenerative disease such as Motor Neuron Disease, Spinal Muscular Atrophy, Parkinson's Disease and Dementia.
